Nutritional Therapy

The core of Nutritional Therapy is finding the root cause for symptoms a client may be encountering so that underlying imbalances may be addressed and the client can progress toward optimal health.  A symptom is a side effect of something wrong within the body – there is a reason or a cause for these symptoms to appear.  Rather than prescribing ways to treat the symptoms for temporary relief, Nutritional Therapy addresses the root cause in order to heal and repair the body.

Nutritional Therapy focuses on bio-individuality.  There is no one-size-fits-all approach, because every person is different with unique nutritional needs.  Nutritional Therapy helps to correct the body’s imbalances and care for nutritional deficiencies using food as medicine and specific protocols that align with the client’s bio-individuality.  An “imbalance” may be many things.  For example, there could be an imbalance because a person consumes more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids when there should be a 1:1 ratio.  Consuming too many omega 6 fatty acids causes inflammation within the body.  Inflammation could appear on the skin, create digestive issues, and even lead to depression.  An imbalance could also be a nutrient deficiency, such as iron.  This may cause anemia, fatigue, and slow metabolism.

In my practice, I use different assessment tools to determine a client’s strengths or weakness within the 6 foundations of Nutritional Therapy.  The foundations are Diet, Digestion, Blood sugar regulation, Fatty acid balance, Mineral balance, and Hydration.  The tools may also highlight imbalances within the Endocrine, Immune, and Cardiovascular systems. Using these assessment tools as well as a detailed health history interview, a recommendation plan will be created and tailored to the client’s individual nutritional needs, stress levels, activity levels, lifestyle, and environment.
